May 18th
The letter Zz is the last letter of the week.  We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Zz and we learned what sound this letter makes. The children were thrilled to learn that we have completed all 26 letters of the alphabet. Our Zz word list was awesome!  We will continue to review the letters of the alphabet and their sounds.
We had a great time learning all about flowers. We studied the different parts of a flower learning what each part does.
Number 20 was the number for the week. We learned to print the number 20 and we learned to write the word twenty. The children were asked to show that they understood what the concept of twenty means. We will continue to work on our numbers, including simple addition.
May 11
Here we are. Another week has just flown by. It is so hard to believe that we only have five weeks of school left. Time is going by so fast.

We have enjoyed another busy week. Here is what’s been going on.  The letter Kk was the letter for the week. We learned the sound this letter makes and we learned to print both the upper and lowercase Kk. The children worked on various activites demonsrating their knowledge of this letter sound.

Numer 19 was the number of the week. The children learned to print the number 19 as well as the word nineteen. The children were asked to show that they understood what the concept of 19 means. We also completed various activites involving the number 19.

Our study of butterflies was awesome. The children had a great time watching these creatures as they changed from stage to stage. Once the butterflies appeared, the children enjoyed seeing them in our butterfly habitat. We talked about the fact that butterflies are not meant to be a pet and therfore we need to do the responsible thing and set them free. Today the entire lower school gathered outside and we all set our butterflies free.

 

May 4
The letter of the week was Xx. We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Xx. We learned the sound this letter makes. We realized that there are not many words that begin with the letter Xx. This week’s word list consisted of words that have the letter Xx in it.
We continued with the number 18, learning to print the number as well as the word eighteen. The children were asked to show that they understood what the concept of 18 means.
We had a great time discussing the life cycle of a butterfly. We defined the word “cycle.”  We learned the terms, “egg, chrysalis, caterpillar and butterfly.” We talked about each of these stages. Hopefully your child has told you about our caterpillars that we have in our room. We are watching them closely as they change from stage to stage. Right now they are in the chrysalis stage. We are very excited to see our beautiful butterflies.
The children had a great time learning about all different kinds of farms. We saw lots of pictures and read many different stories about farms. We learned how hard a farmer works as well as all the machines that are used.
Cinco De Mayo was awesome! The children had a great time learning about this celebration. They really loved all the snacks that were sent in. Thanks so much for all your donations.
Pet week was great. We talked about the word “pet” and what it means. We discussed the responsibilities of having a pet. We compared pets and wild animals. The children were thrilled to share their pets with the class.
April 27
The letter of the week was Ww. We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Ww and we learned the sound this letter makes. The children came up with a wonderful Ww word list. Every child in the class was able to come up with a word!
In celebration of Earth Day, we talked about our earth and the many ways we can help to keep our earth a safe, wonderful place. We talked about the word recycle and what it means. We discussed how we can use something and then turn it into something else that is useful.
The children are so enjoying going to the computer lab. We purchased new software that the children just love. This software helps the children with their letter/ sound recognition as well as number concepts.
March 30th
Happy last week of the month of March. It is unreal how fast this year is going by. Our week was great. Here is what’s been going on.
The letter of the week was Hh. We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Hh and we learned the sound this letter makes. Our Hh word list was amazing! Every child in the class participated and gave us a word. We worked on various worksheets that demonstrated your child’s recognition of the letter Hh sound.
The number 16 was the number for the week. We learned to print the number, we learned to write the word sixteen and the children learned the many different ways we can add two numbers together to find the sum of 16. The children were asked to show that they understood what the concept of 16 means.
The children enjoyed learning about their five senses and how each sense is used. We role played using certain senses to figure out what things were. We talked about the fact that some people do not have all of their senses.
We continued our work with word families. I can’t stress enough the importance of your child knowing his or her letter sounds. This will be vital for next year’s success in kindergarten. Anytime you can play a rhyming game with your child would be great.
March 16th
Letter Nn was the letter of the week. We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Nn and we learned the sound the letter makes. The children are doing a great job with their letter- sound recognition. This is an important skill for the children to master for kindergarten.
In our vocabulary unit we read the book “This Is My Day.”  The story was about how things were years ago and how things are today. We learned the words: my, is and this.  The children were asked to draw a picture of something that is theirs. Every child read their sentence, “This is my ____________.”
We so enjoyed learning about rainbows and how and why they are formed. We watched two different videos on the computer with beautiful rainbows.
We always talk to the children about the importance of listening and following directions. Sometimes the children have a difficult time following the simplest of directions. This week the children were asked to show us that they indeed can follow directions. We pretended to take a test where the children had to follow simple directions. They did a wonderful job with this!
We also worked on things that do not belong. The children were shown different pictures and they had to decide which one did not belong.
March 9
Letter Rr was the letter of the week. We learned the sound this letter makes and we learned to print both the upper and lowercase Rr. Our “Rr” word list was awesome!

In our vocabulary unit we learned the words: if, you and can. We read a story about these words and the children completed a work sheet that helped them understand the meaning of these words.
We also learned what action words are. The children were asked to show that they understood what the meaning of an action word is.
The number 14 was the number for the week. We learned that 14 is a two digit number. We learned to print the number 14 as well as print the word fourteen. The children were asked to show that they understand what the concept of 14 means.
The children really enjoyed our science lesson on wind. We defined wind as,  air that moves. We talked about how wind can help us and how it can be harmful to us. We talked about what happens when warm and cold air meet.  We discussed that fact that we can not see, touch, taste or feel air. The children loved making wind in our room by waving an object in the air.
February24
Letter Bb was the letter for the week. We learned the sound this letter makes and we learned to print both the upper and lowercase Bb.
In our vocabulary book we learned the sight words: are, we and the. We read a story titled ” Monkeys, Monkeys!” The children were asked to identify these words as well as read them. The children were also asked to choose between different pictures to tell one specific story. Every child in the class had a chance to read their sentences. They did an awesome job.
The children had a great time learning about President George Washington. We learned that he was our first President. He was also called the ” Father of Our County.”  We read an online story about George Washington and we learned where he grew up and how he became our first president.  We looked at a quarter and identified President Washington’s head on it. We learned that a quarter is worth 25 cents.
In honor of Black History month, we focused on four great African Americans . They are Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play baseball on a major league team,  Dr. Maulana Karenga, the gentleman that created the holiday, Kwanzaa, Dr. Mae Jemison, the first female African American to venture into space and Rosa Parks, the brave, notorious woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus. We focused on one person per day, looking at their picture on the Internet and reading about them and coloring a picture of each in our packet.
February 17
We wished Abraham Lincoln a happy birthday and discussed who he was and what he did for our county. We read about his life and how he grew up in a log cabin.  We lightly discussed the word “slave” and the children all decided that it was great that ” Honest Abe” helped to do away with slaves.
The letter Ss was the letter of the week. We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Ss and we learned the sound this letter makes. We touched on the sound this letter makes when it is paired with the letter h.  Our Ss word list was awesome. We came up with so many words!
In our vocabulary unit, we learned the words a, am and have. We read a story titled “The Acorn. “  The children are doing an awesome job with the vocab unit. They are learning so many new words!
Number 12 was the number this week. We learned that when you have 12 of something, it is also called a dozen. The children learned to print the number 12 and they learned to print the word twelve. The children were asked to show that they understood what the concept of twelve means. As you are aware, we learned to count up by adding numbers to find the sum of 12.
February 3rd
We sang goodbye to the month of January and welcomed in the month of February. We talked about all the special days that are in this month.
Letter Qq was the letter of the week. We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Qq and we learned the sound this letter makes. We noticed from our Qq word list that most words that begin with the letter Qq have the letter u as the second letter. We also realized that there are not many words that begin with the letter Qq.
Number 10 was our number this week. We learned to print the number 10 and we learned to print the word ten. We learned that the number 10 is a two digit number. The children were asked to show that they understand what the concept of ten means.
What a great time we had learning about Ground Hog’s Day. We discussed Punxsutawney Phil and the legend of Ground Hog’s day. We tied in a science lesson about shadows and how and why they are seen.
January 27
 Letter Jj was the letter of the week. The children learned to print the
upper and lowercase Jj and they learned the sound the letter makes. We learned
that sometimes we see the uppercase J with a hat across the top, sometimes we do
not. We read a “Jj” letter book and learned the words I, jump and jog.
Number 9 was the number of the week. The children identified the 9 touch
points on our number 9.  They learned how to print the number 9, they learned to
print the word nine and they were asked to show that they understood what the
concept of nine means.
You can see in your child’s work the skill level that is accomplished for
each number. The children are doing a wonderful job with this.
We discussed Chinese New Year and learned that this is the year of the
dragon. We read a book about this holiday and it’s customs. The children enjoyed
coloring their dragons.

What a great time the children had playing the role of a meteorologist. We
discussed what a meteorologist does and why this job is so important. The
children predicted what the weather for the day would be and they charted their
own weather paper. There just might be a meteorologist in the near future!

January 13
Letter Ff was the letter of the week and the children came up with the best
word list ever. We learned how to print the upper and lowercase Ff and we
learned the sound this letter makes.  The children are doing a great job with
their letter formation. We have seen such an improvement.
In our vocabulary unit we learned the words can, you and see. We read these
words and we learned how to spell them. We read a book called ” What Can You
See?”
Our study of Eskimos was great. We learned where Eskimos lived and live
today. We compared Eskimos from many years ago to today’s Eskimos. We discussed
how they lived and what kind of homes they had.
Number 8 was the number for the week. We touched the eight points on our number
and we learned to print the number 8 as well as the word eight. The children
learned the many ways we can add two numbers together to find the sum of eight.
The children were asked to show that they understand what the concept of eight
means.
Happy 2012 -January 6
Letter Ee was the letter of the week. We learned to print the upper and
lowercase Ee and we learned both sounds this letter makes. The children came up
with an “excellent” Ee word list.
In our vocabulary unit  we read the book ” What Am I?” We learned the words
what, am and I. The children were asked to think about and write an answer to
the question; What am I?
Lucky number 7 was the number for the week. The children touched the seven
points on our number seven. They learned to write the word seven and they
learned to print the number 7. The children were asked to show that they
understood what the concept of seven means. They also learned the many ways we
can add two numbers to find the sum of 7.
December 22
Letter Cc was the letter of the week. We learned to print both the upper and
lowercase Cc and we learned the three different sounds this letter makes as in
the words car, city and cheese. The children really enjoyed our Cc song.
Hopefully they can sing it for you.

We discussed our sense of smell and how important it is. We talked about the
fact that some people are not able to smell and that they need to use their
other senses to help them. We talked about all the wonderful smells we have this
time of year. The children smelled some wonderful scents and had a great time
trying to guess what they were.

We welcomed in the season of winter (even though it was 60 degrees) and
talked about all the changes that will occur with this season.

We discussed the holiday of Kwanzaa and read a great book about how a very
special family celebrates.

Hopefully you have seen all the holiday crafts your child has made that
beautifully decorate our classroom as well as our hall. The children had an
awesome time doing so.

December 8
Letter Aa was the letter of the week. The children learned to print the upper
and lowercase Aa and they learned the two very different sounds this letter
makes. Differentiating between these two sounds is difficult for children this
age. Your children did a wonderful job with it.  We had an “Awesome Aa word
list.” The children really enjoy coming up with the letter of the week word
list.
The number 5 was the number for the week. The children felt the five touch
points on our number 5.  The children learned to print the number 5 and write
the word five. They were asked to show that they understood what the concept of
five means.  As you can see by the readiness that was sent home, the children
were asked to complete various “problems” based on the number 5.
In science we discussed the words “light” and “heavy.”  We defined these
words and felt examples of what these words mean.
December 1
We sang goodbye to the month of November and welcomed in the month of
December. We talked about all the special days December has. We discussed the
changes that will take place as we move closer to the Winter season.
Letter Oo was the letter of the week. We learned to print both the upper
and lowercase Oo and we learned the two very different sounds the letter makes.
The children came up with a great Oo word list.
Number four was the number of the week. The children learned to print the number
4, they learned to print the word four and they learned the many ways we can add
numbers together to find the sum of 4. The children were asked to show that they
understood what the concept of four means.  As you can tell by the work that was
sent home, your children are learning about numbers in a very sophisticated way.
We enjoyed learning about living and non-living things. We discussed that in
order for something to be living it must breathe, eat and move. The children
were asked to show that they understood the difference between living and
non-living things.
November 19
Letter Ii was the letter of the week. We learned that this letter has two very
different sounds. We learned to print both the upper and lowercase Ii. The
children created a wonderful Ii word list. The children worked on recognizing
words that begin with the short and long Ii sound.
 What a great time we had learning about the words ” same” and “different.”
We compared children in our room and explored what made them the same and what
made them different. The children were very detailed  in using words that
described their friends.
 In the vocabulary part of our language program, we read a book called ”
Ducky’s Surprise.”  To our surprise the book did not have any words.  The
children were told that they had to tell the story by looking at the pictures.
We predicted what would happen next. The children completed a readiness paper
that asked them to predict and draw what would happen next.
November 11
The letter of the week is in full swing. We reviewed the letter Ll, learning to
print both the upper and lowercase Ll. The children learned the sound the letter
Ll makes. We read the book “Look” and learned new words such as look, lamb and
lion. The children also identified our Ll picture cards by looking at the
pictures as well as seeing the words that name the pictures.
Number three was our number for the week. The children learned to print the
number three as well print the word three. The children were able to feel the
three touch points on our number. They were asked to show that they understood
what the concept of three means. We did different activities involving the
number three. These worksheets are sophisticated and challenging.
We reviewed the diamond shape noting that this shape is made up of 4 slant
lines. The children were asked to identify this shape in our room.
In science this week we learned all about air. We learned that we can not see,
touch or taste air, however it is all around us. We learned that air that moves
is called wind.
 In celebration of Veteran’s Day, we will discuss what a Veteran is and why this
day is so important. We will read all about this day in our Scholastic magazine.
November4
We began the week welcoming in the new month of November. We talked about
all the special days in this month. The children love learning the song for the
month of November. Hopefully they will sing it for you.
The last line we learned is the forward circle line. We talked about what
it means to move in a forward motion. The children practiced these lines in
their handwriting book.
 The number 2 was up for review. We learned how to write the number 2 as
well as  write the word two. We felt our number 2 touch point  and the children
were asked  what on their bodies they only have two of. We learned that a “pair”
is two things that go together.  The children were asked to show us that they
understand what the concept of two means.
 The children had a great time learning all about light and how light helps us.
We learned that the sun gives us light and we talked about the word electricity.
We learned that light passes through things that are clear.  We talked about
shadows and discussed that a shadow appears when light from either the sun  or a
light bulb is blocked by an object.
 October 27
We started out the week learning about United Nations Day. We talked about the importance of  people from around the world learning to get along. The children colored a packet representing different countries. They will be sent home

The celebration of Diwali was awesome. Everyone looked beautiful as we gathered together.  Mrs. B. and Mrs. Chari told us all about this special celebration.  We sampled delicious treats.
The children had a great time as we studied the pumpkin that we picked on our farm trip. We learned the different parts of the pumpkin, including the tendril, the skin, the stem, the seeds and the meat.
October 21
Our trip to the pumpkin farm was awesome. The children behaved
beautifully!!! We arrived at the farm and took a walking tour of the animals. We
saw a show about chickens and learned all about pumpkins from a talking pumpkin.
We then boarded the tractor and had a great time on the hay ride. Farmer Bob
stopped at different places along the way to show us all the different crops
they grow on the farm. We learned about the irrigation system they use when
there is not enough rain.
Our final stop before returning to the bus was at the pumpkin patch. The
children really enjoyed walking through the patch in search of their great
pumpkins.
We reviewed horizontal lines and then moved on to vertical lines. We learned
that these lines are lines that go from top to bottom or bottom to top. The
children were asked to identify these lines in our room.
Number 1 was the number of the week. We discussed that the number one is also a
vertical line. The children learned to write the number 1 and they learned how
to spell the word one.   We felt the one touch point on our number 1. The
children were asked to show that they understood what the concept of one means.
October 14

We discussed Christopher Columbus, who he was and how he discovered America.
We learned the word explorer and talked about his journey and his three ships.

The children really enjoyed our unit on fire prevention. We learned what the
word prevent means and we talked about the many ways we can protect ourselves
from fire. We learned the phrase “stop, drop and roll.”
Please feel free to check out our firetrucks that are on display outside our
room.

This week we learned that lines that go from side to side are called
horizontal lines. We learned that these lines are present in many of our letters
and numbers. The children were asked to identify horizontal lines within our
room. We began working in our handwriting book, learning all about the
importance of being a good “writer”. We talked about being a left handed person
and a right handed person. The children completed four pages in their book. “Two
thumbs up” for everyone on a job well done.

Our lesson on leaves consisted of learning the different parts of a leaf and
why leaves change their colors. We read two books about leaves and how they
survive in the season of Fall.

A few reminders:

Monday is our trip to the farm. We encourage you to check the weather and
dress your child accordingly. We will be having snack before we leave for the
trip. We have received very few responses for our Trunk or Treat. Please fill
out your form and return it ASAP. We want this day to be a great one for the
children. Hopefully you are all planning your scarecrow for our Fall Festival.
If you have any questions, please feel free to check with us. A sign up sheet
for our Halloween party is posted outside our room. Please remember to sign your
child’s name next to the item you are bringing in.

October 7
We welcomed the month of October and discussed all the special days in this
month. We talked about the seasonal changes that will also occur. The children
were very happy as we sang our good bye song to the month of September.
“Hip To Be Square” was a big hit. We reviewed the square shape, learning that a
square has four straight lines that are all the same size. The children were
asked to identify squares within our room.
Our handwriting pre-test was a piece of cake. Before the test we talked
about the word test and what it means. We discussed the difference between
pictures, letters, numbers and words. The children were handed their new
handwriting book. We discussed the importance of taking care of our books as we
looked through the first few pages.
During the pre-test, the children were asked to draw a picture and then
draw letters. This pre-test shows us the strength in the children’s ability to
write, as well as if they understand the difference between pictures and
letters.
With fire prevention week right around the corner, our class had a great time
when the fire department came to visit us. They taught us all about what do to
keep safe in case of a fire as well as what things we should stay away from. We
saw a firefighter dress into his turn out gear and had a great tour of their
fire engine.
September 26 
It is so hard to believe that the month of September is almost over. The
time has just flown by. Please remember to send in your child’s permission slip
for our farm trip along with your payment.
 We had a great week in school. It’s wonderful to see how well the children
are progressing. They are learning the routine of our room and everything is
slowly falling into place. Here is what we have been up to.
We learned the number 0. We learned how to print the number and we learned
how to spell the word zero. We defined zero as meaning nothing. We looked at our
touch point 0 and saw that the number did not have any touch points. The
children were asked to show that they understand what the concept of 0
means.
 We reviewed the circle shape learning that when we print the circle, we
start at the top and continue until we go all the way around and back to the
top. The children were asked to identify circles in our classroom.
Our specials classes are off to a great start. The children really enjoy
their gym, art, music and computer classes. Spanish class will be starting next
week.
The children will be starting their hand writing book next week. We have
some “pre” writing skills to cover before we begin our letter of the week
program.
Reminder: homework packets will be sent home every other week. You may have
your child work on this packet at your leisure. Please return the packet when
the entire packet is complete.

September 22 

This week we talked about the word friend  We discussed what a friend is
and how great it is to have a friend. We learned that in order to have friends,
you first need to be one. The children were asked to pick two of their new
friends from our class and create them on paper. They did a wonderful job with
this. Their creations are hanging outside our room, please feel free to check
them out.
We continued to practice our tracing. We  see a tremendous change in the
children’s work even after one week!  “Two thumbs up,” for everyone.
The children are really settling in quite nicely. They are quickly learning
the rules of our room as well as our routine. It’s amazing how quickly they
learn.
 We had our first fire drill this week. We talked about the drill before it
happened and we explained how important it is to pay attention to the teachers
during the drill. The children did a great job with this. They were so quiet
lining up and getting out of the building.  We will continue our studies of fire
prevention in October.
 Tomorrow we will discuss the season of Fall. We will talk about the
different changes that occur during this month.

Welcome

The first full week of school has been great. The children have settled in quite nicely and they are learning the routine of our room. We are spending quite a bit of time learning all the rules and just getting to know each other.

 We start every day by saluting our flag and singing ” Grand Old Flag.”  We discuss the day of the week, the month and the year. We learned our first month song called “September.” Hopefully your child can sing it for you.

This week we focused on “All About Me.” We talked about how special each of us are and how we are alike and how we are different.  The children created “their bodies.”  They are hanging up outside of our room. They are absolutely adorable.  We also made ” All About Me” books. You will see them at Back To School Night.

We spent a good part of the week learning to trace. We talked about what the word trace means.  We emphasize the children sitting properly in their chair as well as holding their pencil properly. We are working on having the children practice tracing their name in uppercase first letter followed by lowercase letters. It would be great if you could practice with them at home.

Please know that we move very slowly for the month of September. We want the children to feel great about themselves and their new class. We want them to learn from the very beginning what is expected of them. We will move into full swing starting in October.
